What is an explainer video, why do you need one, and how do you get one?

Before I got serious about my voiceover career, I had a certain perception of the work. Most of the voiceover projects I worked on when I was doing it part time were commercial advertising…mostly radio and television. So I figured that when I would turn voiceover into a full-time career, commercials would continue to be the primary genre I would work in.
It didn’t take long for me to realize that wasn’t going to be the case at all. Soon after I went all in with voiceover, I noticed that a good amount of the projects I was getting hired to work on were explainer videos. In fact, that’s still the case to this day. I’d say that aside from e-learning, explainer videos are consistently the biggest category of voiceover I work in.
If you landed on this page, you may be wondering what an explainer video is. Or maybe you’ve heard of them, and are deciding if you need one. Or, if you’ve decided you need one, you’re wondering how to go about getting one.
What is an Explainer Video?
Simply put, an explainer video is created to draw attention to, and explain, your product or service. In some ways, it’s very much like a commercial you would see on TV or the internet. You’ll often see an explainer video on the landing page of the product or service’s website. In addition, the video may be posted on YouTube, Facebook, or other content platforms.
Here’s an example of an explainer video I recently narrated for Colorado Christian University, explaining their CCU SyncedIn platform.
Do You Need One?
If you have a product or service that you want the world to know about, then yes…an explainer video is a great way to get started!
How Do I Get One?
You’ll find there are many companies that produce explainer videos. If your budget allows you to hire an outside company that has experience producing them, that’s probably your best bet. However, there are also quite a few tools that will help you produce your own. You can purchase software that will help you create whiteboard or doodle animations, that can sometimes look just as good as if you paid a company to do it for you.
Explainer Video Voiceover
Here’s the part where I come in! Generally, it’s best to write your script and have the voiceover produced before you produce the video. It’s much easier to match video to voiceover, than the other way around. It’s possible to produce the video first, but then the voice actor needs to spend extra time syncing the voiceover to the video, and most voice actors charge an extra fee for that.
There are plenty of places you can go to find a voice actor to narrate your explainer video…but seeing as you’re already here, why not hire me for it? When you select me to voice your explainer video, you can expect to get exactly what you need, with no hassles. I provide pristine audio, usually delivered within a few hours, and always at a fair rate. My goal is to help make this part of your project as easy as possible!
